B anksy born in the early 1974 in Yate, South Gloucsetershire is a well-known pseudo name of a British graffiti artist. His early work was first showcased during Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s. As an artist, Banksy's work is heavily influenced by the French artist Blek Le Rat and Richard Hambleton. Technique wise, Banksy's stencils and graffiti are very similar to that of Blek Le Rat while his themes revolve around satirical pieces such as ethnicity, politics, and culture. Banksy's work generated a newfound global interest in street art. In 2006, one of Banksy's paintings sold in Sotheby Auction house for more than 50,000 pounds. It is also in this auction that Banksy's green stencil of Mona Lisa with real paint dripping off her eyes was sold for 57,000 pounds. In December of 2006, journalist Max Foster coined a new phrase "The Banksy effect". In late January 2011, his film work "Exit Through The Gift shop" was nominated for 2010 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
