Hieronymus Bosch Painting Painter Biography

H ieronymus Bosch (1450-1560) most well-known piece of art is The Garden Of Earthly Delights. Little is known about Hieronymus Bosch. Even his date of birth is only estimated to be sometime around 1450. Both Bosch's father and uncle painted and therefore it's mostly assumed that these where the sources the artist learned from. In combination with the type of imagery he worked with along with the time period, Bosch is known as the first surrealist. Most of Bosch's art has religious themes and the imagery is rich with personal meaning for the artist, which makes his work very hard to interpret. Bosch only signed 7 of his works so the exact number of original art is up for speculation. In 1463 Bosch witnessed a devastating fire that destroyed 4000 houses. This may have had some affect on the angle of his work and his fascination with creating paintings of heaven, hell and God. There is much interpretation to his work because of the way the imagery is laid out and the subjects of the paintings. Some believe the paintings are created for entertainment value and others argue they are interpretations of morality. Because of the nature of his work, the age of the period he worked in and the fact that he only signed a few paintings he is an artist that became a center of much debate in the art world.
