P ablo Picasso (1881-1973) is one of the most well-known names in the world of art. He was born into middle class Spain to Ruiz and Maria Picasso. He was a second generation painter, as his father was a professor of art at the School of Crafts and a curator to the area's museum. Picasso started learning the classical technique of drawing and figure painting. He continued his training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Part of his training helped give him a solid ground in the classical techniques. In some of his later work it's easy to recognize the influence of El Greco, with bright colors, extreme visuals and long limbs. His work is often divided into periods: The blue period, the rose period, the African-influenced period, Analytic Cubism and Synthetic Cubism. Many different artistic movements can lay claim to finding a foundation in his work, but Cubism is what he is most known for. He truly enjoyed working with different mediums and reinventing his work again and again. His piece, "Guernica" is easily the most famous piece of art that was created in social protest. Picasso was known to be one of the most prolific artists ever, creating an estimated total of more than 50,000 pieces of art that includes drawings, paintings, sculptures and ceramics. He still had many of these in his possession when he passed away, including art from some of his comrades which he swapped with. Several of his pieces make up the most expensive artwork that has sold in the world. These include: Nude, Green Leaves and Bust which sold for 106.5 million and Dora Maar au Chat selling for more than 95 million. It's unsurprising that more of his paintings have been stolen than that of any other artist.
